Activity 1: Trying the Headset

Objectives:

  • Learn how to wear and use the Meta Quest VR headset
  • Know how to cast the headset view to a computer
  • Navigate the Meta Quest UI using the Quest Touch controllers

This activity will have you take turns putting on the VR headset and reporting your findings to the rest of your team. The rest of the team will ask questions and guide you through the activity. Ideally, you should have two laptops ready, one with this activity, and another for viewing the headset’s screen.

Have one person stand on the arrow and wear the headset. Adjust the lens width and the straps as desired. If you need help, please as the instructor for assistance.

Have your teammates hand you the controllers and wear the wrist straps. Make sure they are in the correct left/right hands!

To begin, the headset will ask you to create a "guardian" boundary. This defines the play area that is safe. For now, you'll want to create a stationary boundary. Use the triggers on the controllers to go through the prompts and do so.

Once you have created a stationary boundary, you should be in the "home environment".

Now, let's cast the headset view so everyone can see!

On a second laptop, make sure you are connected to the JMU-Official-Wireless Wi-Fi network. To view the cast, go to https://www.oculus.com/casting. Log in with the username and password given to you with the headset.

In VR, look down at the right controller. You should see a button in the lower-right that looks like an oval. This is the "Oculus" button. Now, follow the steps below:

Pressing the Oculus button will toggle the "universal menu". Now, turn 90 degrees to the right and then hold the Oculus button. What happens?

Holding the Oculus button will re-center the view. Face your original direction and re-center the view again.

Open the universal menu and click on the "App Library" button (it should look like a grid and be the right-most button). Find the "First Steps" app and launch it.

Have fun! Take turns with your teammates so that everyone has a chance to try the headset. Make sure to stay inside the boundary and not hit anyone.

You do not need to turn anything in for this activity.
