Strategies For Succeeding on Tests

• Recipe for failure:
  • Attend class, passively listen to lectures
  • "Do" the reading by running your eyes over the assigned pages
• Recipe for success!
  • Figure out what you need to know (I'll help)
  • Take responsibility for learning it (I'll help)

Reading Quizzes

• Strategy #1 (Mostly Useless):
  • Open the quiz, skim for answers in the book
• Strategy #2 (Probably Helpful):
  • Complete the reading, possibly taking notes
  • Use the quiz to test your understanding

Programming Assignments

• Project specifications will not give you all the information you need to complete the project successfully
  • Specifications will describe desired functionality, but may not tell you how to code it
  • There will be ambiguity
  • There will be errors
• It is YOUR responsibility to produce functional code
• Assignment grades will be based code quality and functionality, not effort
• In my experience, grit counts for more than raw talent or previous experience
  • Growth mindset
• Starting early gives you time for setbacks

• There are many sources of help. You would be insane not to use them:
  • My office hours
  • TA's
  • Piazza
• These resources will be more valuable if you spend some time thinking/reading/researching before you seek them out
  • but not too much time
• You should not expect me to be available 24/7
