  • Reviews:
    • A review is an examination and evaluation of a work product (or process)
  • Techniques:
    • Desk Check - Examination of a work product, usually by the creator (e.g., proofreading)
    • Walkthrough - An informal examination of a work product by a team
    • Inspection - A formal examination of a work product by a trained team
Intent of Inspections

    • Not correct them
  • Examine the Product:
    • Not evaluate the creator(s)
Roles During Inspections

  • Author:
    • Created the product
  • Moderator:
    • Schedules meetings, organizes materials, facilitates meetings, reports results, and monitors follow-up activities
  • Inspector:
    • Examines the product
  • Reader:
    • Guides the discussion (e.g., reads the document)
  • Recorder:
    • Records defects found, issues raised, and time spent
The Inspection Process

  • Readiness Check:
    • The Moderator performs a cursory review to ensure that the product is ready to be inspected
  • Overview "Meeting":
    • Provides necessary background information
  • Preparation:
    • Individual inspectors become informed
  • Inspection Meeting:
    • The Reader guides the Inspectors through the product, one piece at a time, the Inspectors identify defects, and the Recorder keeps notes
  • Rework:
    • If necessary, the product is modified
  • Follow Up:
    • If necessary, this may involve another inspection
