The Great DVD
The Great DVD
is one of
several fictitious companies
created by Prof. David Bernstein, now a member of the
Computer Science Department at James Madison University
.
1 About the Company
The Great DVD is a chain of rental stores located in
airports. It was originally focused on allowing customers to rent
movies (on DVD) at their originating airport and return them at
their destination airport. However, because of technological
changes, the company's focus has changed (though its name has
remained the same because of the companies excellent reputation
and name recognition).
One change is that The Great DVD now also rents movies on BluRay
and "digital copies" of movies (that can be played on a variety of
devices that do not have a DVD/BluRay drive). Another change is
that the company now also rents games (on various formats). A
final change is that The Great DVD now also rents hardware of
various kinds (e.g., headphones, external storage devices, memory
cards, tablets, and laptop computers) to make it easier to watch
movies and play games (and work, if you really need to) on flights.
The Great DVD is currently working on a system that allows its
customers (and, potentially, other passengers) to "trade"
movies/games/hardware during a flight.

3 About the Name and Logo
The name,
The Great DVD is a play on "the Great
Divide", the highland that crosses New Mexico, Colorado,
Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia, and Alberta. It is
supposed to make you think of both travel and DVD.
The logo is supposed to convey the impression of
mountains. The colors are supposed to make you think of travel
in general and air travel in particular.
4 Some History
When The Great DVD was "created" in 1995, very few people
had portable video games and almost nobody had portable DVD
players. Then, both standalone DVD players and DVD drives
in laptops became commonplace. Most recently, DVD players/drives
have largely been replaced by streaming services. The Great DVD
has adapted accordingly.
