PCD Help

This page provides information to assist users in navigating around the PCD website. Below is an annotated image of the MAIN MAP page. A description follows the annotated image that explains the various buttons on the page. The Navigation Bar and Status Bar can be found at the top of PCD web pages.

An important concept in using the PCD is that of the "current location". When you first acess the PCD home page, a point in the center of Quetico is set as the "current location". As you move from web page to web page, the PCD website keeps remembers the current location. The MAIN MAP makes the "current location" the center of the map it displays. The SEE DATA page displays data about the campsite closest to the "current location". Other pages use the "current location" similarly. The current location is changed in one of three ways: using Set SITE in the Status Bar to specify a campsite to be the "current location", using Set LAKE in the Status Bar to specify a lake to be the "current location", or by clicking on the map on the MAIN MAP page.

The topo map image is available in zoom levels from 2mp to 128mp. The "mp" means "meters per pixel", a setting of 2mp means each pixel in the map image represents 2 meters of actual distance.
Campsite Display Control There are 3 possible settings for how campsites will be displayed on the map images.
    • No campsite information is displayed.
    • For each campsite in the PCD database, a red dot is displayed.
    • For each campsite in the PCD database, a red dot and the color-coded campsite name is displayed.
Because of space requirements, no campsite information is displayed on 128mp map images no campsite names are displayed on 64mp map images, regardless of the Campsite Display Control setting.
    Campsite Color
    Code Table
When campsite names are displayed, the background color used in the box displaying the campsite name is based on the Quality rating given the campsite by PCD contributors.
NotRated(LF) The campsite has not been rated by nay contributor AND it is included in the database only because it was in the Legacy Forest data. Campsites only listed in the Legacy Forest data should be viewed with suspicion, contributors have reported many such sites as not really being campsites.
Unrated Unrated sites listed by sources other than Legacy Forest.
      0.0 to 0.5 Not a campsite.
      0.6 to 1.9 Bad
2.0 to 5.0 Average or better site. (Inukshuks get a separate color code for good sites rated above 3.5.)
